Angel Guidelines

“Angels” are dedicated volunteers who:

                  • Introduce square dancing to newcomers
                  • Help fill squares so that all dancers can participate
                  • Demonstrate how enjoyable square dancing can be

Our Tuesday classes at Frontier Squares are designed for new dancers to learn square dancing. Classes also provide an opportunity for experienced dancers to refine their skills and refresh their knowledge of the basics. We encourage recent graduates to be an Angel, as it helps reinforce what you've learned. However, being an angel does not guarantee a spot in every square. If you'd like to be sure of a spot in the square every tip, consider attending as a new dancer (RETREAD) and paying the student fee.

Angel Roles and Responsibilities

Angels are essential for filling odd numbers in squares. We use a computer rotation program to help assign angels where needed. You will be added according to the number displayed on the screen. Sometimes, you may be moved between squares or asked to sit out to accommodate a new dancer. Whether or not the computer is used, angels should aim to fill the Sides positions first, leaving the Heads positions for new dancers. The rotation program typically assigns two student couples and two angel couples to each square.

Remember, Tuesday nights are focused on teaching new dancers. It’s important that they receive the attention and space they need to learn. Please follow these guidelines to support their progress:

  • Guide the New Dancer. Provide subtle, helpful guidance. If done well, only the guided dancer and you will know it happened.  Avoid pushing, pulling, or making them feel uncomfortable.

  • Stay Enthusiastic and Focused. Maintain a positive attitude throughout the class. If you lose interest or patience easily, being an angel might not be the right fit for you.

  • Don’t Talk During the Caller’s Instructions. A new dancer can’t listen to two people at once. Wait until the tip is over to answer questions or direct the dancer to the Caller for help.

  • Move Slowly. Match the pace of new learners as they are introduced to new movements.

  • Wait for the Caller’s Instruction. Do not perform a new movement until it’s been fully explained by the Caller.

  • Avoid Advanced or Trick Movements. Stick to the basics. Avoid fancy moves, such as gimmicks, bumps, or shortcuts, as they can confuse new dancers. Wait for the Caller to introduce twirls or advanced moves.

  • Get Ready Quickly When the Music Starts. Help set up squares quickly and encourage new dancers to get on the floor promptly.

  • Arrive on Time and Stay Until the End. Be ready to dance when class begins and stay for the full session.

  • Dance With a Variety of Dancers When Not Using the Computer Rotation. Dance with different people throughout the night. This sets a good example for new dancers, showing them the value of moving around and dancing with multiple dancers.

  • Be Considerate While Sitting Out. If you’re sitting out during a tip, avoid disrupting conversations with others, especially when the Caller, Cuer or Instructor is teaching or reviewing a call.

  • Use Proper Hand Holds. Hold hands properly (palm to palm). Never grip too tightly, hold someone’s thumb, or clamp down with your thumb.

  • Remember What It Was Like to Be a Beginner. Someone was patient with you when you were learning. Be sure to pass that kindness along to others!
